Accreditation / Awards

In choosing a school for your child, there are many issues to consider. The number one consideration is getting a quality education that will enable your child to pursue any direction he/she may choose. With ninety-nine percent of Edgewood graduates going on to higher education, we at EA know the importance of a solid foundation.

Other important issues to consider are safety, the student life opportunities offered such as sports, clubs and community involvement, the campus and its facilities, and the convenience of the location of the school. In looking through this website, we hope to give you a small glimpse of the Edgewood experience and see why graduates bring their children to EA to continue on the tradition started back in 1967.

Edgewood is about education, it is about competing in sports, but most of all it is about families working together to provide the best learning experience for their children.

Edgewood Academy has been accredited by the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) since 1974. As of the 2003-04 school year, Edgewood is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS, the National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA) and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation Alliance (CITA). This means that our graduates are recognized by colleges as a quality prospect for their school. Our students score well above the national average on the Stanford Achievement Test.

For the seventh year in a row, Edgewood has been named an AISA Blue Ribbon School. This distinction is given to schools exemplifying excellence in teaching, student performance, school life, and school and community interaction. Blue ribbon schools also are involved in an on-going process of school improvement. The most significant improvements for Edgewood Academy has been the recent addition of an elementary building, a girls' weight room and a football stadium.

Edgewood Academy has also been given the AISA Chairman's Award for athletic excellence.

On the ACT, which consists of curriculum – based tests of educational development in English, math, reading, and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college work, EA scored above both the state and national average. EA scored 22.2 compared to the state average of 20.3 and the national average of 21.1. In addition, the rate of EA students who were deemed college ready (75% chance of making a B or higher) was twice the state rate.

Also, 25% of the 7th grade class qualified for the Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) based on SAT 10 testing with scores from 95% to 99.9% of the national percentile.

Head of School, Frankie Mitchum, said these scores reflect EA’s challenging curriculum and EA’s outstanding faculty, staff, and students. Mitchum also indicated that even though the scores were good; there are still areas that need improvement.
