EDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2009
Welcome, everyone, back to an exciting school year at Edgewood! The faculty has been hard at work this summer planning for a great educational and fun filled year. Please feel free to contact us at school or by e-mail if you have any questions or concerns. Teacher e-mails are first initial last name (ex. jsteube@edgewoodacademy.org).
We are pleased to maintain the same staff as last year with a few minor changes. Mrs. Nan Martin and Mrs. Jaime Tatom are the two Kindergarten teachers. They will be implementing a new reading series, Reading Street, which is already being used by grades 1-6. Mrs. Sharon Lyle teaches first grade. First graders have begun AR and are off to a great start. Mrs. Beverly Mack is our second grade teacher. Second graders go to Computer and Spanish classes once a week this year. Third grade is taught by Miss Cathy Payne. This group will work on all math facts during the course of the year. Mrs. Shawn Fischer has moved to fourth grade from first (Mrs. McVay now teaches in the upper school). Mrs. Fischer is from Ohio and studied Alabama History all summer long to be able to teach this class to the students. Mrs. Dandridge and Mrs. Hill team teach fifth and sixth grades. These two classes are all alone on the elementary end of the main building since fourth grade has moved to the elementary building.
Mrs. Victoria Lowman teaches music on Friday mornings to grades K-3. We appreciate her time and enthusiasm. Mrs. Easterling and Mrs. Voss continue to provide us with lunch and snack in the lunchroom. Coach Angela Cook is our new librarian, Patty Williams is the computer teacher/guru, and Dale Gantt is our Spanish teacher. Faces in the main building include Mr. Mitchum, Head of School, Mrs. Angus, school secretary, Mrs. Powell, Business Manager, and Mrs. Montgomery, Secondary Director of Education.
I would like to welcome all our newest wildcats. New Kindergarten students are Jaycie Black, J.T. Brazell, Emma Brown, Ana Davis, Blane Duncan, Dawson Gray, Shelby Henderson, Sydney Henderson, Jackson Lowman, Finley Parker, Cade Rattan, Molly Snow, Emma Weldon, and Hannah Grace Woodall. Others new to EA are Sophie Luster, first grade; Gracie Johnson, second grade; Levi Belew and Noah Montague, third grade; Sara Grace Ellis, fourth grade; Carli McCord and Baylee Turner, fifth grade; and Lydia Belew and Christian Montague, sixth grade.
Drop off and pick up in the afternoon is going great, and unexcused tardies are almost nonexistent. Thank you parents!! Remember to take your child to the main office for tardy slips. Checkouts on Friday afternoon to go home early are unexcused. Please send a note to school in the morning if your child is going home with someone other than on pick up list. This is a must, especially for spend the night parties on Friday afternoon!
Short shorts and strappy tops are not allowed for any students. If leggings are worn, the skirt or dress must be in accordance with school policy length. Tennis shoes are required for Kindergarten and first grade.
Faculty and staff are doing our part to keep our children healthy. Teachers disinfect every afternoon. I am in close contact with the Alabama Department of Health thanks to DeeAnn White. Hopefully, we will be receiving the H1N1 vaccine for voluntary vaccination of students and staff when it is available. If you are a nurse and are able to administer the vaccines for us please contact me. Remember to keep sick children home until fever-free (without medicine) for 24 hours. Children must not have thrown up or had diarrhea for 12 hours before returning to school. Please notify the school if your child is diagnosed with the flu.
PARENT TIPS – READING FOR MEANING
Ask your child questions about a story that you’ve read together. Remember the 4 W’s: Who? What? When? Where? This will reinforce what your child has learned from the story.
