Edgewood SAT Ranks High

Edgewood Academy received high ranks on the Stanford Achievement Tests taken in the Spring.  Grades one through eight were tested, although only testing in grades two, four, and eight are required by the Alabama Independent School Association. The second grade class scored in the top ten percent of all AISA schools while grades 4, 6, and 8 scored in the top twenty-seven, thirty-five, and sixty- three percents respectively.  Classes averaged 2.1 years above grade level with all classes scoring remarkably higher than the national average.  Head of School Frankie Mitchum was overwhelmingly pleased with the results.  “I am very pleased with the success and progress of our students.  These scores reflect the hard work and dedication of students, faculty, and parents.  Edgewood strives to provide the best education for our students in a positive and safe environment.”

Edgewood continues to make improvements in its academics.  This summer Smart Boards were installed in every classroom to enhance classroom learning through new and innovative technology.  The school’s SACS Accreditation was again renewed in March of this year.  Edgewood has also been awarded the Blue Ribbon School Award for the ninth consecutive year by AISA.  This is the highest honor that is bestowed by the organization for academics, administration, and school community.

Edgewood Announces Instructional Changes and Improvements

Edgewood Academy Announces Instructional Changes and Improvements

The Edgewood Academy Board of Trustees recently approved several recommendations by Head of School Frankie Mitchum to improve instruction and curriculum design. Three of the major changes are as follows:

Grade Structure

Edgewood’s current grade structure of elementary school and high school will be changed. Under the new structure, elementary grades will be K-5, middle school/Jr. high grades will be 6-8, and high school grades will be grades 9-12.

Edgewood will implement a modified middle school/junior high school concept. Research has shown that adolescents have unique developmental needs. These intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs are different from either elementary or high school students. This concept will be a bridge between elementary and high school. This concept is not an exaggerated elementary school or a miniature high school, but a blend of the two. These students will be grouped together in their own special section of the building.

Technology

Based upon information gathered from the strategic planning focus groups and the recent SACS CASI Quality Assurance Review, improving technology to make 21st century classrooms was identified as a top priority. As a result, Edgewood will be partnering with Information Transport Solutions (ITS) of Wetumpka for technology enhancements. These enhancements will include but not limited to the following:

  1. Complete replacement of infrastructure for a completely wireless system.
  2. Installation of interactive Smart Boards in every classroom.
  3. Each teacher will be provided a digital visual presenter.
  4. A modular virtual field trip machine will be purchased. This machine will allow students to take a field trip anywhere in the world without leaving campus.
  5. New lap top computers will be purchased for the computer lab as well as for all teachers.

Dual Enrollment

Edgewood will be partnering with Faulkner University to provide dual enrollment classes for eleventh and twelfth grades. This program allows students to obtain both high school and college credits though only taking one class. These classes will replace English and History classes traditionally taught at Edgewood. Faulkner will provide an instructor to Edgewood to teach the classes. These dual enrollment credits will transfer to any accredited college, university, or junior college.

Head of School Frankie Mitchum stated “We are very excited about these dynamic changes taking place at Edgewood. I would like to thank our Board of Trustees for making these commitments to improving the education of our students.”

Edgewood Academy Earns SACS CASI Accreditation

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Counsel on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) an Accreditation Division of AdvanceEd, is pleased to announce continued accreditation of Edgewood Academy for five more years. Edgewood earned this accreditation by: complying with high quality standards and policies for quality schools; engaging in continuous improvement; and demonstrating quality assurance through internal and external review.

A school’s accreditation serves as a critical accountability component of a school’s demonstrated effectiveness and ability to provide successful schooling for children. SACS CASI accreditation provides schools access to a network of services and technical assistance that supports every school’s ability to identify and meet its goals for improving student performance and the teaching and learning process.

Accreditation engages the entire community of stakeholders in a continuous process of self- evaluation and improvement. The overall aim is to help schools be the best they can be on behalf of the students they serve. Accreditation is validation that the school is operating with institutional integrity. It also serves as evidence that it is fulfilling its vision and mission for its students.

Head of school Frankie Mitchum stated “the Accreditation process further validates that Edgewood Academy is a school of high quality. Our Board, faculty and staff, students, parents and community are to be commended for their outstanding effort in this process. We will all continue to work together to make Edgewood the school of choice in the River Region.”
